The Kitchener Lions Club is proud to announce Penny and Manfred Conrad as the 66th Citizens of the Year, celebrating a lifetime of leadership, philanthropy, and transformative impact throughout Waterloo Region.
For more than sixty years, the Conrads have helped shape the cultural, economic, and social fabric of the community – leaving a legacy defined by innovation, compassion, and unwavering commitment to improving quality of life.
Honouring Two Exceptional Community Builders

Manfred arrived in Canada at just 18 years old, beginning his new life as a painter and taking on any work available to build a future in his adopted country. Penny later joined him from England, and together they planted deep roots in Waterloo Region, igniting what would become a remarkable journey in business, philanthropy, and community leadership.
During the economic challenges of the 1990s, when many local factories closed and families faced uncertainty, the Conrads saw firsthand the profound human need around them. Their response was both generous and compassionate. Through their church, House of Friendship, and numerous local charitable organizations, they offered support, rallied others to help, and became a source of stability during a difficult time for many residents.
Leaders in Sustainability and Innovation
The Conrads are best known today as the founders of The Cora Group, a company recognized as one of the region’s leading developers and a champion of environmental innovation.
Their projects include numerous LEED-certified buildings and Canada’s first zero‑carbon office building, located in the University of Waterloo Research + Technology Park, a milestone that cemented Waterloo Region as a national leader in sustainable development.
A Legacy of Philanthropy That Touches Every Corner of the Community
Penny and Manfred’s charitable contributions extend widely across the region. Their support has strengthened:

- Community institutions committed to improving everyday life
Their thoughtful, collaborative approach ensures that every initiative they support has lasting and meaningful impact.
